Is West Harlem near St. Nicholas Park safe (138th St. & St. Nicholas Ave.)?

I am looking at an apartment at 138th St. & St. Nicholas Ave in Harlem. Is this a safe neighborhood (both during the day, but especially at night)? I viewed the apartment during the day and it seemed like a nice area- well-kept housing, a St. Nicholas park right across the street, etc, but admittedly I didn't walk around the area much- only to the B/C subway at 135th and back. I researched online and found that the overwhelming response was to avoid the St. Nicholas park area and the 135th subway stop. Can anybody who lives/has lived in this area give me some feedback on the safety level? Thank you!
