Is there a better alternative to the present patent system?

The patent system in the U.S is plagued with abuses. Most often than not patented are ridiculously obvious things. The formulations of patents are overly broad and deliberately vague. As a result, the present patent system stifles innovation instead of promoting it. Did anyone come up with a better system somewhere?
