Finnish girls and ear piercings - was it a trend in the 90's?

I've noticed a few Finnish girls who are around late twenties have had their ears pierced 2 or 3 times in each ear, but no longer wear anything in the top few holes, and was wondering if it was a trend at some point in Finland for girls to get their ears pierced two or three times in each ear?
